Victorious (2f Wootton Bassett - Heaven On Earth, by Galileo) maintained her unbeaten record with victory in the Group 2 Queen Mary Stakes at Royal Ascot on Wednesday. The Ballydoyle-trained filly had opened her account on debut with a comfortable victory at Naas in April. She followed up over course and distance when landing the Group 3 Fillies Sprint Stakes last month. Ridden by Ryan Moore, the daughter of Wootton Bassett was running over five furlongs for the first time and she settled in rear towards the far side before switching left with two furlongs left to run. Victorious made headway from a furlong out and led inside the final 110 yards to score by two lengths from Senorita Bonita (by Starspangledbanner), with Ruiva (by Munnings) a nose behind in third. Aidan O’Brien, registering his 99th winner at the meeting, said: “Ryan gave her a brilliant ride. She’s a filly with one eye so she’s always lacked a bit of confidence but she’s been coming along lovely. “She’s incredible, we knew she was very classy and we’ve always felt she’d be very good. “Going back to five [furlongs] in this type of race, sometimes you can get lost, but it was lovely how Ryan got her racing in a small group. “In her left eye she doesn’t have any sight, so he slowly got her out and reassured her all the time. He rode her in Naas and he really loved her. We knew she was very good but sometimes over five they might not get everything together but we were very hopeful. “The people around her are the ones who are very careful not to frighten her, they’ve taught her everything very slowly. They’ve done a great job, it’s all about the people dealing with her and I’m so delighted for them. “Ryan nursed and then when he knew she was happy that she knew where she was going, he then said ‘go’.” Moore added: “She’s a gorgeous filly and I think the world of her. She’s just a sweetheart and has always shown plenty. She’s so straightforward and the complete professional.” Victorious was bred by Westerberg.
