Lake Forest (5g No Nay Never - Lady Aquitaine, by El Prado) gained another Group-race success with a gritty win in the Group 2 Lennox Stakes at Goodwood on Tuesday. The William Haggas-trained gelding landed the Listed Spring Trophy Stakes at Haydock by over five lengths on his seasonal reappearance in May, having won the Group 2 Gimcrack Stakes as a juvenile and then the valuable Golden Eagle in Australia at three. Ridden by Cieren Fallon, the son of No Nay Never settled towards the rear before making headway over a furlong out. The pair led inside the final 110 yards and kept the challengers at bay to strike by a neck. Maureen Haggas, assistant to her husband William, said: “We thought there would be lots of pace and there wasn't, so I thought Lake Forest ran really well. He’s a totally different horse since being gelded. It is extraordinary what difference that can make." On running in the Group 1 Sussex Stakes tomorrow, she added: “The owners are up for it, and we've plenty of time to decide. He's got nothing until York and doesn't have to do any travelling. He's pretty laid back, so unless something happens overnight, I would imagine that is the plan. If he’s okay, why not?" Fallon added: “The expected pace did not happen, so it was Plan B. It’s not ideal, but when you are riding a horse of this calibre, you can change your tactics just like that. They did not go much of a gallop, and he was in a position where I had to commit a long way out, which was not ideal. "He’s a horse who likes to be covered up and get there as late as possible, but in a race of this stature, with it being so tricky, I could not sit there and wait for a gap because it can just close like that. "I had to peel him out down the middle of the track and, as you can see, he does not really do a stroke, which I suppose is not a bad thing with tomorrow in mind. Things did not go according to plan, but he got the job done, which is pleasing.” Lake Forest was bred by Sahara Group Holdings.
