Benjamin Hornigold (2c Blackbeard - Greta, by High Chaparral) became the latest first-crop winner for Blackbeard when making a striking debut at York on Friday. The Joseph O’Brien-trained colt was making his racecourse debut in the often-informative Convivial Maiden Stakes and he duly stepped up to the occasion. Ridden by Colin Keane, the son of Blackbeard settled towards the rear of the field before making headway from two furlongs out. The colt pressed the leader over a furlong out and kept on well towards the winning line to strike by two lengths. In third was Sole Ambition (by No Nay Never). Keane said: "He's a lovely big horse who came from the breeze-ups. We were drawn beside the experienced ones and I thought if I ended up behind them that would be great. "He relaxed straight away into the bridle and moved and quickened away well. "He feels like a horse who would go another furlong [up to a mile] and I don't see why he wouldn't appreciate nicer ground. I don't see why he can't be a stakes horse." Benjamin Hornigold was bred by Capricorn SA.
