Evershed (4f Churchill - Balankiya, by Darshaan) became the latest black-type winner for Churchill with a comfortable score in the Grade 3 Waya Stakes at Saratoga on Friday. Trained by Arnaud Delacour, the four-year-old was returning to the scene of her runner-up effort in last year’s Grade 2 Saratoga Oaks and she duly went one better with a three-quarter-length win. Evershed was ridden by Flavien Prat and the pair broke smartly from the inside post, eventually settling behind the pace-setting Storm Miami before challenging for second along the back straight. The daughter of Churchill waited for room turning into the home straight and came up the inside of the long-time leader to win a tad snugly at the line. Delacour said: "I was toying with the idea of running here in a two-other-than last week, going a mile and three-eighths, to run in the Flower Bowl. The race didn't go. So, we were like, 'Okay, now that [the Waya] is probably the only option we have left.' But that was a great back-up and she was doing very well, I have to say. “The pace scenario was a big question mark, obviously. There was not a lot of speed. Flavien knew that. It probably helped as well that we had a great post, post number one. He got her out of there, then he was able to get her to settle and have plenty of options." Evershed was bred by Lynch Bages and Camas Park Stud.
