The well-bred Wild Sapphire (4g No Nay Never - Sapphire, by Medicean) got off the mark with a comfortable win at Killarney on Tuesday. The Moyglare Stud homebred had placed on three previous occasions, including when a half-length third on his debut at the Curragh at two. He duly stepped up on those promising efforts with a first win under Chris Hayes. Trained by Dermot Weld, the gelding raced in second before being asked to close from two furlongs out. He responded well and led inside the final 110 yards to win by three-quarters of a length. Hayes said: “It worked out grand, it was like a bit of work. I got a good tow off Billy [Lee, on runner-up Sron Na Caise]. This lad has disappointed us a little bit, there's no point saying it any other way. “I kind of had to allow him to kick as I wanted it to be picture perfect for him today, have one crack inside the furlong pole. “I thought he showed good resolution and galloped through the line. That might do his confidence a bit of good. “He likes these nice tracks and the ground is a credit to them down here in the conditions. My filly in the first wants an ease, he wants top of the ground and they both went on it.” Wild Sapphire is a half-brother to Listed winner and Irish Oaks fourth Elizabeth Jane and the pair are out of Sapphire, a Group-winning half-sister to champion stayer and exciting Beeches Stud sire Kyprios.
