Leadlight (2c Saxon Warrior - Crysdal, by Dalakhani) got off the mark with a staying-on success at Galway on Tuesday. The Joseph O’Brien-trained colt was just denied last time out when a head second at Navan last month and he went one better on his fourth start to strike by a shoulder. Previous winners of the Galway contest include subsequent champion stayer and The Beeches Stud young sire Kyprios and Irish Derby victor Sovereign. Ridden by Declan McDonogh, Leadlight was positioned prominently and came to press the leaders from three furlongs out. The colt stayed on well to lead inside the final 110 yards and strike narrowly. In third was Aladdin's Cave (by Camelot). Representing O'Brien, Kevin Blake said, "He was a little bit unfortunate the last day so it was good to get compensation and he was very strong coming up the hill today. This looked a better race on paper, although I don't know how deep it was. "He has a rating of 80 and I don't know if he has gone much beyond that but he stays very well. He's still a baby, he'll be a middle-distance horse next year and should continue to progress with racing. " Leadlight was bred by Watership Down Stud.
