Imperialism (2c Churchill - Shannow, by Pivotal) put his racecourse experience to good use when getting off the mark at Newmarket on Thursday. The Andrew Balding-trained colt had finished fifth at Kempton on his debut last month and gamely stepped up to score at the second attempt. Ridden by James Doyle, the Churchill colt pressed the leader before being ridden over a furlong out. He led inside the final 110 yards to edge past the runner-up and score by a length. In third was Rebetiko (by Saxon Warrior). This contest was previously won by triple Group 1 scorer and exciting Grange Stud sire Hurricane Lane. Imperialism was bred by Epona Bloodstock.
