Fastnet Crystal (5m Crystal Ocean - Yeats Country, by Yeats) recorded a first win with a straightforward success over hurdles at Downpatrick on Tuesday. The Joseph O’Brien-trained mare was making her hurdles debut, having run twice in bumpers, finishing a half-length second on her first start at Thurles in December. She had excuses when running below par last time and she duly proved that effort all wrong on her third outing. Ridden by Richard Deegan, Fastnet Crystal settled in midfield before making headway from three flights out. The five-year-old pressed the leader approaching the final hurdle and led up the run-in to score by an easy six and a half lengths. Deegan said: "She jumped like a buck. I schooled her a couple of weeks ago and she's very good. Going out on the last circuit, we were starting to pass a couple and she was starting to really enjoy it." Fastnet Crystal was bred by Vincent Black.
