Churchill

Churchill embarked on a seven-race winning streak which established him as his generation’s champion two-year-old and as a dual Guineas winner at three. His winning sequence featured four consecutive Gr.1 victories, including the National Stakes (by more than 4 lengths), the Dewhurst, the 2,000 Guineas (by a length from Barney Roy and Al Wukair) and the Irish 2,000 Guineas (by 2½ lengths from Thunder Snow). He was also second in the Juddmonte International over an extended mile and a quarter. Churchill’s racing record showed that he had inherited a degree of stamina from his sire Galileo, balanced by plenty of speed from his very fast female line. This speed was also apparent when his year-younger sister Clemmie won the Gr.1 Cheveley Park Stakes over six furlongs on her way to becoming a champion 2YO. Their dam, the Storm Cat mare Meow, was a fast and precocious daughter of the top-class sprinter Airwave (Gr.1 Cheveley Park Stakes). Airwave’s half sister Jwala won the Gr.1 Nunthorpe Stakes over five furlongs.

Churchill also represents one of the world’s most potent nicks. From Galileo’s 62 foals out of daughters of Storm Cat, 12 have become GSWs, with a sensational total of eight becoming Gr.1 winners - that’s virtually 13%. Four have become classic winners, which underlines the power of Churchill’s bloodlines.

Churchill enjoys the advantage of being free of the DANZIG blood which has been one of the other biggest contributors to Galileo’s success. Churchill will surely suit daughters and granddaughters of DANEHILL such as DANEHILL DANCER (who is excelling with Galileo), EXCEED AND EXCEL, ROCK OF GIBRALTAR, HOLY ROMAN EMPEROR, FASTNET ROCK, DANSILI, KODIAC, MOZART, CHOISIR and MASTERCRAFTSMAN.

The GREEN DESERT branch has plenty to offer, as Churchill’s female line produced the Nunthorpe winner Jwala to OASIS DREAM. Galileo sired an Oaks winner from a GREEN DESERT mare and the dual Derby winner Australia from a daughter of CAPE CROSS. Three sons of Galileo – Teofilo, Intello and New Approach - have already sired Gr.1 winners from granddaughters of GREEN DESERT. Mares by INVINCIBLE SPIRIT should reinforce Churchill’s 2yo ability.

The CHIEF’S CROWN branch of the DANZIG male line should suit. Teofilo, another son of Galileo, sired classic winners Voleuse de Coeurs and Trading Leather from mares by GRAND LODGE and his son SINNDAR.

Another son of Galileo sired the brilliant Enable from a SADLER’S WELLS mare, making her inbred 2x3. Frankel and Teofilo have respectively sired winners of the Oaks and the Dewhurst from daughters of MONTJEU, this being 3x3 to SADLER’S WELLS. Oaks winner Anapurna is one of four Group winners by Frankel with SADLER’S WELLS inbreeding. Another son of Galileo has Gr.2 and Gr.3 2yo winners inbred 3x4 and 3x3 to SADLER’S WELLS.

Galileo has also enjoyed excellent results with the NUREYEV line, including siring ten Group winners from 35 foals out of PIVOTAL mares. Among them are the Gr.1 winners Hermosa, Magical, Rhododendron, Hydrangea, Love and The United States. Frankel is also doing well with PIVOTAL mares, siring the top-class pair Cracksman and Veracious. New Approach, another son of Galileo, sired the Oaks winner Talent from a PEINTRE CELEBRE mare. Forever Together is among Galileo’s Gr.1 winners out of daughters of THEATRICAL and STRAVINSKY.

Breeders hoping to produce high-class middle-distance winners by Churchill should consider sending him mares from the MILL REEF line. Galileo has sired Gr.1 winners from three generations of this line, including ten Group winners from DARSHAAN mares. Galileo also has 23% stakes winners with Darshaan’s son MARK OF ESTEEM, including the Irish Derby winner Treasure Beach. DALAKHANI sired the dam of Galileo’s smart son U.S. Army Ranger.

Galileo has a Gr.1 winner from a BLUSHING GROOM mare, while RAINBOW QUEST sired the second dam of Frankel and Noble Mission. Galileo’s sons have already made their mark with this line, with New Approach’s Oaks winner Talent also having a second dam by RAINBOW QUEST.

Churchill’s speed could be reinforced by mares with AHONOORA blood. Galileo’s classic winners New Approach and Was respectively have a dam and a second dam by this top sprinter. Galileo also has three Group winners, including a classic winner, from mares by INDIAN RIDGE, and both Galileo and Frankel have sired Gr.1 winners from INCHINOR mares. Also, the Gr.1 winners Magical, Maybe, Rhododendron and Photo Call are among Galileo’s seven Group winners with a second dam by INDIAN RIDGE. ACCLAMATION is out of an AHONOORA mare and his daughters have produced Group winners to three other sons of Galileo. DARK ANGEL mares are also likely to reinforce Churchill’s juvenile ability.

Galileo’s Derby winner Ruler Of The World and his top-class son Ulysses have dams by KINGMAMBO, his Breeders’ Cup Turf winner Red Rocks is out of a MACHIAVELLIAN mare and his Irish St Leger winner Order of St George has a dam by GONE WEST. Other sons of Galileo have Group winners with dams by GONE WEST, KINGMAMBO, MACHIAVELLIAN, WOODMAN, CHESTER HOUSE, LEMON DROP KID, DUBAI DESTINATION, WHIPPER, MEDICEAN, VETTORI, OBSERVATORY, ZAFONIC, THUNDER GULCH, NAYEF and DUBAWI.

The SHARPEN UP line has produced a classic winner to Galileo and Teofilo has three SWs out of DIESIS mares. Galileo sired Nathaniel, Great Heavens and Seville from daughters of SILVER HAWK and the Arc-winning Found from a mare by INTIKHAB. He also has Group winners from daughters of DYNAFORMER, KRIS S., LEAR FAN, RED RANSOM, DR FONG and SRI PEKAN.
