Churchill

Churchill won seven consecutive races which established him as his generation’s Champion at two and as a dual Guineas winner at three. His winning sequence featured four consecutive Gr.1 victories, including the National Stakes (by more than 4 lengths), the Dewhurst, the 2,000 Guineas (by a length from the future Gr.1 winners Barney Roy and Al Wukair) and the Irish 2,000 Guineas (by 2½ lengths from Gr.1 winner Thunder Snow).

Churchill’s racing record showed that he had inherited a degree of stamina from his sire Galileo, balanced by plenty of speed from his very fast female line. This speed was also apparent when his year-younger sister Clemmie won the Gr.1 Cheveley Park Stakes. Their dam, the Storm Cat mare Meow, was a fast and precocious daughter of the top-class sprinter Airwave (Cheveley Park Stakes). Airwave’s half sister Jwala won the Gr.1 Nunthorpe Stakes.

Churchill also represents one of the world’s most potent nicks. From Galileo’s 66 foals out of daughters of Storm Cat, 14 have become black-type winners, with a sensational total of eight becoming Gr.1 winners - that’s 12%.

Churchill enjoys the advantage of being free of the DANZIG blood which has been one of the other biggest contributors to Galileo’s success. Churchill will surely suit mares by DANEHILL and his sons. Gleneagles, another son of Galileo with a Storm Cat dam, has already has three Group winners out of grand-daughters of DANEHILL, the stallions involved being DANEHILL DANCER, ORATORIO and FASTNET ROCK. Galileo himself has a tremendous record with DANEHILL DANCER mares and has also enjoyed Gr.1 success with daughters of EXCEED AND EXCEL, ROCK OF GIBRALTAR, HOLY ROMAN EMPEROR, DANSILI, DESERT KING and MOZART.

Churchill’s female line produced the Nunthorpe winner Jwala to OASIS DREAM. Galileo sired an Oaks winner from a GREEN DESERT mare and dual Derby winner Australia from a daughter of CAPE CROSS. Three sons of Galileo - Teofilo, Intello and New Approach - have already sired Gr.1 winners from grand-daughters of GREEN DESERT. Mares by INVINCIBLE SPIRIT should reinforce Churchill’s 2yo ability.

The CHIEF’S CROWN branch of the DANZIG male line is interesting. Teofilo, another son of Galileo, sired Gr.1 winners Voleuse de Coeurs and Trading Leather from mares by GRAND LODGE and his son SINNDAR respectively.

Another son of Galileo sired the brilliant Enable from a SADLER’S WELLS mare. Frankel and Teofilo have respectively sired winners of the Oaks and the Dewhurst Stakes from daughters of MONTJEU, this being 3x3 to SADLER’S WELLS. Oaks winner Anapurna is one of four Group winners by Frankel with SADLER’S WELLS inbreeding.

Galileo has excellent results with the NUREYEV line, siring 11 Group winners from 39 foals out of PIVOTAL mares, among them are Love, Hermosa, Magical and Rhododendron. Frankel is also doing well with PIVOTAL mares, siring champion Cracksman and Gr.1 winner Veracious. New Approach, another son of Galileo, sired the Oaks winner Talent from a PEINTRE CELEBRE mare. Another Oaks winner Forever Together is among Galileo’s four Gr.1 winners out of daughters of THEATRICAL and STRAVINSKY.

Churchill’s speed could be reinforced by mares with AHONOORA blood. Galileo’s classic winners New Approach and Was respectively have a dam and a second dam by this top sprinter. Galileo also has three Group winners, including a classic winner, from mares by INDIAN RIDGE, and both Galileo and Frankel have sired Gr.1 winners from INCHINOR mares. Also, Galileo’s Gr.1 winners Magical, Maybe, Rhododendron and Photo Call all have a second dam by INDIAN RIDGE.

Breeders hoping to produce top middle-distance winners by Churchill should consider sending him mares from the MILL REEF line. Galileo sired Gr.1 winners from three generations of this line, including 11 Group winners from DARSHAAN mares. He also has 23% SWs with Darshaan’s son MARK OF ESTEEM, including Irish Derby winner Treasure Beach.

Galileo has a Gr.1 winner from a BLUSHING GROOM mare, while RAINBOW QUEST sired the second dam of Frankel and Noble Mission. New Approach’s Gr.1 winner Talent also has a second dam by RAINBOW QUEST.

Other stallions with dams by Storm Cat have sired Gr.1 winners from daughters of SEEKING THE GOLD, CARSON CITY, LEMON DROP KID, UNBRIDLED and UNBRIDLED’S SONG. Galileo’s sons Ruler Of The World and Ulysses have dams by KINGMAMBO, Red Rocks is out of a MACHIAVELLIAN mare and Order of St George has a dam by GONE WEST. Other sons of Galileo have Group winners with dams by GONE WEST, KINGMAMBO, MACHIAVELLIAN, WOODMAN, CHESTER HOUSE, LEMON DROP KID, STREET CRY, WHIPPER, MEDICEAN, VETTORI, OBSERVATORY, ZAFONIC, THUNDER GULCH, NAYEF and DUBAWI.

The SHARPEN UP line has produced a classic winner to Galileo and Galileo has a total of nine Group winners with second dams by either DIESIS or his brother KRIS.

Galileo sired Nathaniel, Great Heavens and Seville from daughters of SILVER HAWK and the Arc-winning Found from a mare by INTIKHAB. He also has Group winners from daughters of DYNAFORMER, KRIS S., LEAR FAN, RED RANSOM, DR FONG and SRI PEKAN.
